Belknap County was created in 1840 under the laws of the state of New Hampshire. The city of Laconia serves as county seat.

Belknap County is located in the center of the state and includes New Hampshire's largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, within its boundaries. Land area totals 401.3 square miles and water area totals 67.3 square miles.

According to the United States Census Bureau, about 4.7&per; (60,356) of New Hampshire's estimated 2003 population (1,287,687), lives in Belknap County.

Belknap County Voting Districts

Representatives of Belknap County elected to state government and the United States House of Representatives are elected to represent citizens of a particular portion, or "district" of the county. Knowing which district you live in is important as it allows you to identify your current representatives and candidates who are seeking to represent you.

Districts are defined for each office. For example, residents of Meredith reside in US house district 1 and state house district 3. For purposes of electing a senator, Meredith is part of senate district 2. The following tables will allow you to identify the elective districts that each Belknap County municipality belongs to.

Belknap County Legislative Voting Districts

The legislative body of New Hampshire government is referred to as the New Hampshire General Court. It's a bicameral body consisting of a Senate and a House of Representatives. It is the largest state legislative body in the country and the third largest legislative body in the English-speaking world (Only the U.S. House of Representatives and Great Britain's Parliament are larger.)
